Massage As A Back - Pain Killer

A regular massage is often considered to be a treat, rather than a necessity. Most people believe that having a massage is good for aches and pains, or can help if they’ve overdone the exercise. Not everybody realizes that massage therapy is also a powerful painkiller that can even be used to help people with back problems to reduce the amount of medication they must take.
Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain and if you’re one of the 31 million Americans who suffers with back pain at some point in their life, you’ll know how miserable it can be. If you are dealing with chronic back pain – which is pain that’s lasted more than three months  it can impact on your daily life, and stop you doing things you want to do. You could be reliant on drugs to keep you mobile or help you sleep.

The vicious pain cycle
If you can no longer exercise pain-free, you might end up in a vicious cycle of inactivity which makes your pain worse, which stops you being active. Or you could just increase your meds but that just masks the problem. Also, some strong pain meds contain painkillers opioids like codeine which can lose their power over time as you build up a tolerance to their effects. They can also have unwanted side effects.
What you need is a way to manage your back pain that is effective but doesn’t have the side effects. Wouldn’t you know it, research has shown that regular massage along with your prescribed medication and any other advice from your healthcare supplier can be so powerful that you might be able to decrease the number of painkillers you need to manage your back pain and start to live a more active life.

How massage can help beat back pain
A massage session doesn’t just relax you, it can help to promote tissue repair, improve the blood circulation and does wonders for your stress levels and mood. Recent research showed that regular massage therapy combined with exercise helped people suffering from chronic back pain to feel less anxious about their condition too. The study, which took place at a pain management clinic in Western New York, involved sixty chronic low back pain patients who were split into two groups. One group received regular massage therapy, twice a week for four weeks, along with their regular treatment, and one group only carried on with their prescribed treatments.
The participants all recorded their own pain levels before and after having massage therapy on a scale of one to ten. There was a significant difference between the pre-and post-treatment pain rating in the group that had regular massage, but the control group who carried on as normal reported no changes to their pain levels.
If you suffer with back pain and want to try something different – book that massage session now.

Types Of Massage

Depending on your goals and situation, your massage therapist may recommend one specific type of massage or a blend of several. These include:
  • Swedish or Relaxation Massage -- the most common in America with gentle, light to medium pressure
  • Deep Tissue Massage -- deeper pressure across the grain of your muscles
  • Hot Stone  -- which uses smooth, heated stones to increase circulation and relax muscles
Each type of massage has its own benefits, so be sure to discuss your back pain with your therapist. You may decide on one particular massage style and repeat it with every visit, or you may decide to combine various styles at different times. Either way, you'll discover how back massage can make you feel more relaxed and relieved of pain, stress and tension.

Tips:

For a professional massage, seek a licensed massage therapist. The American Massage Therapy Association recommends you ask your massage therapist about their credentials to practice massage therapy. Talk to your massage therapist about why you are seeking massage therapy -- this will help your therapist choose the best style and approach to your massage.

Warm Bamboo Massage

Known for its healing properties, this massage works at all levels to balance, calm and energize you physically, mentally and spiritually.

If you're looking for a rejuvenating massage treatment, there's nothing better than Warm Bamboo Massage Therapy.

What is it?
Warm Bamboo Massage is for the person wanting a luxurious Swedish Massage or serious Deep Tissue Bodywork.  Bamboo rods are used to roll and knead the soft tissue and knots that combine the traditional benefits of massage along with comforting quality of heat creating the extreme sense of relaxation and well-being.

Technique used in bamboo massage therapy
A bamboo massage is typically done with bamboo & rattan rods of various lengths and diameter. The rods are generally heated but may be used at room temperature. Longer pieces of bamboo in various widths are used for gliding strokes, whereas smaller tools can be used for more detailed work.  The bamboo and rattan replace the hand of the therapist providing a deeper, firmer massage. The bamboo rod is held by the therapist and rolled over the muscle with the same strokes they would use with their hands. The Warm Bamboo Massage improves circulation, sensory nerve perception and provides a deep sense of relaxation and serenity.

What are some of the benefits of Warm Bamboo Massage?
  • Increases circulation
  • Flushes body of metabolic wastes (i.e., lactic acid) for faster healing time and detoxification
  • Decreases muscle spasms
  • Breaks up tissue adhesions
  • Releases endorphins to promote relaxation and pain reduction
  • Warms and relaxes deeper tissue

  5. Any condition that taxes the circulatory system (i.e., uncontrolled high blood pressure)
  6. Most bacterial infections
Always consult your doctor and your therapist to see if massage or specific massage types are right for you.

Make the most of your massage
Communication is key. Tell your therapist about your exercise routine and any particular pains, injuries, or conditions you have.

Before you book your appointment, make sure your massage therapist is certified or licensed in your state and associated with the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) or the American Massage Therapists Association (AMTA).

Remember, only receive massage therapy when you are well.

If you don't feel well, reschedule your massage and consult a doctor.

Tuning The Athlete

If you haven’t done so yet, you owe it to yourself to add massage therapy to your training routine. Once a month spend a few bucks on yourself to get a trained and licensed massage therapist to get in there and loosen up some of those tight spots. Shoulders, hamstrings, hip – whatever is causing you a little grief. Wave Crest Massage Therapy offers CrossFit  athletes an amazing rate that makes it more affordable than you may think.
Look, even the best athletes injure themselves from time to time. CrossFit is no different.  We are lifting weights, doing repetitive movements like pull ups and push-ups, squats, cleans, presses  and whatnot – we get tired, sometimes we lose sight of our form and we experience some pain. The trick is to get on top of the issue right away! First, address the cause. Talk to your trainer and let them know the issue. It may be a simple form issue. Or maybe you are using too much weight. They’ll guide you. Don’t let those little hot spots of pain and tightness fester. Ice it after the WOD. Get a professional massage from a New York State Licensed Massage Therapist.
But it’s not just about injury. It’s about flexibility and mobility. A little body work each month can go a long way to stretching out those tight spots and increasing your range of motion.
CrossFit athletes can benefit from massage therapy in a variety of ways:
•speeds circulation of oxygen to muscles
•increases flow of nutrients through soft tissues
•flush toxins through the lymphatic system
Applied stretching techniques combined with massage therapy can improve range of motion and joint flexibility. It can also help you recover faster from an injury.
We offer personalized treatment plans, depending on the severity of pain, sensitivity to touch and other issues. In most cases, treatment will include multiple techniques such as massage and heat.

CrossFit / WOD Massage

As CrossFit Athletes, we understand that we must endure some aches and pains as a result of our WOD’s. We hold a lot of those aches and pains in our shoulders, traps, hamstrings and quads. CrossFit massage speeds recovery and aids those aches and pains with trigger point massage therapy and deep tissue massage therapy. A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body.

Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release.

Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension with the focus being on the deepest layers of muscle tissue and tendons.

A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people’s blood pressure fell after a single 45-60 minute deep tissue massage.

Deep Tissue massage and trigger point therapy help greatly in the renewal and recovery of the CrossFit athlete. These techniques not only give our bodies the release of muscle tension after a rigorous workout, but they also assist in providing necessary toxins and gases to release from our muscles.

For anyone participating in regular physical activity, Sports massage therapy every week or two may be a great addition to your normal regimen.

The Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is geared toward athletes of every kind, from world-class professionals to weekend golfers and tennis players. The particulars of the sports massage technique are specific to the athlete's sport of choice. Focusing on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.
Aspects of sports massage therapy are gaining popularity as useful components in a balanced training regimen. Sports massage therapy can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Athletes have discovered that specially designed sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance.
One of the key benefits of Sports massage therapy compared to other modalities is its ability to target muscle-tendon junctions. A 2010 study in the journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that even a 30-second massage improved hip-flexor range of motion. Another study conducted by Margaret Jones, Ph.D. of the American College of Sports Medicine, demonstrated a notable trend toward decreased muscle soreness in the athletes who received massage either before or after exercise.
For anyone participating in regular physical activity, Sports massage therapy every week or two may be a great addition to your normal regimen. Working together, we will find a plan that will work best with your schedule, level of activity and budget.

The American Massage Therapy Association states that research shows that in relation to exercise and athletic participation, massage can do the following:
Reduce muscle tension
Help athletes monitor muscle tone
Promote relaxation
Increase range of motion
Decrease muscle stiffness and soreness after exercise
Enhance athletic performance
Help prevent injuries when massage is received regularly

Massage Therapy for Crossfit Athletes

Mobility and movement are the essential building blocks to CrossFit. Without proper movement and mobility we find ourselves unable to perform the CrossFit movements with full range of motion and pain free. There are many facets to mobility and one is ensuring that we keep our muscles in tip-top shape to keep us moving well. A great way to do that is to incorporate regular massage therapy into our training program.

Benefits of massage therapy:

Improves blood and lymph circulation
Improves flexibility, lengthening of fascia and muscle which increases range of motion and has the added benefit of making your muscles look more toned
Decreases inflammation
Improves respiratory functions
Stimulates the immune system
Improves lymphatic movement to break up and release toxins and helps reduce pain and inflammation in the joints and tendons
Decreases stress and anxiety

Self Myofascial Release

To a lesser degree, this offers the same benefits as massage but you can do it at home on your own. Think of it as “maintenance work” that you can do in between your massage therapy sessions.  The most common tools used are a Foam Roller and a Tennis Ball or a Lacrosse ball.  Just ask us how to use them and I’ll demonstrate them for you.  Highly recommended to make them part of your daily routine.

Massages don’t just feel great, they also provide excellent recovery assistance for CrossFit athletes. Getting a regular massage once a month or more can help you reduce soreness and risk of injury while increasing mobility so you can perform better.

During high intensity exercise, lactic acid and general toxins from acidity increase in your muscles. Your body can naturally clear lactic acid and toxins with time and rest, however massage can help expedite the process, especially when you are working out often.

The best times to get a massage:
•At least 45 minutes after you have completed your WOD for the day.
•During recovery periods – rest days or deload weeks.
•3 days before a competition or race. This will help improve your range of motion and mobility for your competition.
•After a competition or race to help you recover quickly.

Getting the most out of your massage
You may find that your muscles are sore the next 24 – 48 hours after a massage. Some ways that you can help your body recover and get the most benefits from your massage include:
•Drinking lots of water before and after your massage. Being properly hydrated assists lymphatic drainage and blood flow.
•Using heat packs or having a warm bath with Epsom salts reduces muscle tenderness.
•Get a good night of sleep.
